Tom Gabel, frontman of critically-acclaimed punk band Against me! is making headlines around the world this week, not for the band's music, but for the public unveiling of his plans for gender reassignment.
Gabel opened up to Rolling Stone this week about her lifelong struggle with gender confusion.
"I'm going to have embarrassing moments," said Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about -– is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
Gabel, who will begin going by the name Laura Jane Grace once the process is underway, will remain married to her wife, Heather Gabel. The pair have a two-year-old daughter together.
"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."
Fans of the band have pointed to lyrics in the Against Me! track "The Ocean" as an inspiration for the name change.
"If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman/ My mother once told me she would have named me Laura, I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her."
New Jersey punk rock band The Gaslight Anthem are among thousands of people to offer their encouragement and support to the singer.
"How about you leave the guy alone. How about you let another human being make a decision about their lives without your snide prejudices and bigotry? This is one of the hardest decisions a person can make," reads a post on The Gaslight Anthem's blog.
