Atlanta rapper Lil Phat was shot late Thursday night outside Northside Hospital Women's Center. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. He was 19 years old.

Police are searching for two men who, witnesses say, were seen running from the scene shortly after the shooting.

Lil Phat, whose real name was Melvin Vernell III, was a member of Trill Entertainment, also home to rappers Webbie and Lil Boosie. Lil Boosie was recently found not guilty of murder in a highly publicized case. Authorities have not commented on whether the cases could be related.

Described by Trill's website as "the underdog ready to bust to the front line with his consistent street anthems and hustler music lyrics", Lil Phat had yet to make much of an impact nationally, but was featured on Webbie's single Independent, which rose to number 9 on the Hot 100 chart in 2008.

"RIP to my lil brother Phat! Life so fucked up! TRILL4LIFE," said a Twitter message posted by Webbie today.
