Phillip Phillips, the unfortunately-named Dave Matthews fanatic, has been crowned the winner of this year's American Idol.
Phillips beat out what has been described as the most talented group of finalists the show has ever seen, including early favorites Joshua Ledet, Skylar Laine and runner-up Jessica Sanchez.
"I never expected any of this," said the 21 year old Georgia native. "It hasn't sunk in yet. It's such a blessing. I'm kind of ready to try and comprehend it all."
In a star-studded two-hour finale, each finalist (except for Jermaine Jones, who was disqualified for failing to disclose numerous outstanding criminal charges) took a turn entertaining the audience. Rihanna, Neil Diamond and a recharged Aerosmith also took the stage.
After being announced the winner, Phillips was only able to perform a portion of his coronation song Home before breaking down in tears and leaving the stage to embrace his family.
Early reviews have called Home the best coronation song to have come from the program, though Phillips, in an unusual move, has declared that he does not want the track to be his first single.
"The song that I did tonight that supposedly is my single, it's not really my single, I told them it's not my single," Phillips said shortly after winning. "I have my own stories to tell, but I couldn't do my song [on the finale]; we just didn't have enough time."
“I don’t write songs like that,” he continued. “It’s a very good song and I’m glad people enjoyed it, but I’m itching to do my own stuff.”
