When the news broke late last month that Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, founding members of indie rock heroes Sonic Youth, were divorcing after 27 years of marriage, the first thing on a lot of minds was the future of the beloved band. Fans looking for clues were only given a terse, vague statement from Matador Records:

"Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."

With the above-mentioned South American tour now complete, the members of Sonic Youth seem to be going their separate ways. Guitarist Lee Ranaldo is releasing a solo album, "Between The Times And The Tides" early next year. Former Sonic Youth co-conspirators Jim O'Rourke and Bob Bert will reportedly make guest appearances on the record.

Thurston Moore, meanwhile, is busy planning a solo tour. The trek begins only a few short days after the last Sonic Youth show, and will last through mid-February. While it seems sort of macabre to relate the timing of this solo outing to the announcement of the impending divorce, a quote from an interview Moore did with Spin Magazine in 2008 speaks volumes:

"I can't think of how or where I'd be without Kim's influence. And we're like any couple that's been together for close to 30 years. There's a genuine psycho-physical connection," he told the magazine. "I can easily follow the allure of wanting to go out and be with the boys, and play industrial noise and smoke pot and drink, but nothing replaces the reality of our relationship. I can't trade that for anything."
